Do you cool down after exercising or competing in physical activities?  If not, then why don't you?  Many people may think it’s not important or that it’s a waste of time.  Some feel they don’t have time, think that it’s repetitive, or that it’s a hassle when they’re in a hurry. 


Regardless of the reasons for not doing a cooldown, the purpose of this article is to stress the importance of cooling down after exercising and to provide some general information about how to do it properly.


A cooldown is any activity, either physical or mental, that helps you recover from any physical activity, exercise, or sport.  To be more specific, cooling down gradually reduces your heart rate, your rate of breathing, and your body’s temperature. It also helps reduce your physical/mental intensity and relax your muscles from working out in a tensed state.  In short, a cooldown is designed to return your body to a pre-exercise state and promote recovery.  It is an important part of any good workout.


Cooling down after physical activity does not need to be complicated nor take a great deal of time.  For most people, 5-10 minutes is all that is needed to reduce heavy breathing and to lessen any challenging recovery issues. To cool down after rigorous physical activity, simply reduce the intensity of the activity you’re doing.  For example, if you’ve been performing an activity in which you’ve been doing a large amount of intense running, simply turn your running into a jog. From a jog, you can further reduce your pace to a moderately paced walk, then further reduce your pace to a slow walk before stopping.
